Meet Anna-Vija McCloud
Anna-Vija McCloud is a marketing expert and business strategist who has built a thriving career by helping businesses grow through customized marketing strategies and meaningful connections. In a recent conversation, she shared insights into her journey, her marketing philosophy, and the importance of relationship-building in business.
An entrepreneur, in Anna-Vija’s words, is “someone who sees opportunity where others see obstacles. It’s not just about starting a business—it’s about taking ownership of your future, solving problems in creative ways, and turning ideas into action. Entrepreneurs don’t wait for permission; they build, adapt, and push forward, even when the path isn’t clear. It’s about resilience, strategy, and knowing that success comes from consistency, not just inspiration.”
Anna-Vija recounted how marketing was originally part of her job at a country club, but she never envisioned it becoming her career. After leaving her position and struggling to find a new job, she turned to freelancing in marketing. As she built her client base, she quickly realized the demand for affordable, strategic marketing services for small business owners who couldn’t afford full-scale agencies.
“I was on unemployment, out of savings, and feeling completely lost,” Anna-Vija shared. “But I knew how to do marketing, and I knew business owners who needed help. That’s how I got started—by simply offering my skills to those who needed them.”
Now, 11 years later, her marketing agency, Piccolo Solutions, continues to thrive by offering tailored strategies for businesses of all sizes.
How Did Piccolo Solutions Come to Life?
“In the spring of 2014, I was unemployed and trying to find a job that fit my experience and skills but only found part-time contractor gigs. I was clinically depressed and having panic attacks. I spent most days searching online for job opportunities but managed to attend a few networking events. Many of my contacts knew I was looking for a job and, in the meantime, offered me some marketing project work.”
After several of these opportunities, she noticed a pattern: small business owners lacked great marketing options. “At the time, there were far fewer independent marketing firms in Nashville. Business owners had limited choices: hiring a full-time marketing director, working with large agencies, or finding someone affordable but inexperienced.”
She sent an email to her network announcing her new venture, and within six months, she had 17 new clients. “The business grew so quickly that I had to hire part-time help. My clients were happy, which allowed me to increase my services and pricing over time. There’s such a huge market for outsourced marketing in Nashville that we have grown steadily ever since.”
Every entrepreneur faces challenges. What obstacles have you overcome in your journey?
“I struggle with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. I started my company in March 2014 at my lowest point. I was unemployed and struggling with mental health challenges. I knew that continuing to hide in my house searching for jobs wasn’t the answer.”
A friend once gave her a drawing of a man eating an elephant with the caption: “one bite at a time.” She adopted that principle and applied it to both her personal and professional life.
“I sought therapy, focused on my mental health, and built a company culture that prioritizes well-being. To date, Piccolo Solutions has grown 56% on average year-over-year, with low employee turnover and a strong team culture.”
Has there been a piece of advice that has really shaped your approach to business?
“One thing I learned from my mentor, Hannah Paramore, is that people will leave you. Staff, clients, vendors—everyone will eventually leave. Accepting that truth makes letting go easier. Now, we openly invite clients who aren’t the right fit to end their contracts early. I happily help coach team members who aren’t connecting with their role to find new jobs. Not every ending needs to be a struggle or taken personally.”
What’s next for you and your business? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
Piccolo Solutions has grown to allow Anna-Vija, as CEO, to focus on her passion—teaching. “This year, I’m acting as a Fractional CMO for clients needing customized help and booking more corporate training and keynote speaking opportunities.”
Being an entrepreneur can be demanding. How do you recharge and find balance?
“For me, rest isn’t about sitting on the couch all day,” Anna-Vija said. “It’s about finding what recharges you. Sometimes that’s a long bath after a day of meetings, or just having quiet time with my husband where no words are necessary. Everyone’s definition of rest is different.”
What’s one key takeaway you’d share about long-term success?
Anna-Vija left one key takeaway: Business success isn’t just about making sales—it’s about showing up for people and giving without expecting immediate returns.
“Everything will come back around,” she said. “Just focus on being a resource and supporting others, and the right opportunities will find you.”
With this philosophy, Anna-Vija McCloud continues to make an impact in the marketing world, helping businesses grow while fostering genuine connections in the entrepreneurial community.
